What to expect when accessing The Hotline

The Hotline satirises anti-choice helplines and comments on the political climate regarding reproductive healthcare for AFAB people. It also plays verbatim interviews from people who have had negative experiences when it comes to reproductive healthcare.

Once open, you can access The Hotline anytime via phone or chatbot; the 1800 number is a pre-recorded, audio based experience and the chatbot provides a text based experience. If you would like to call, but don’t have the funds, you can call The Hotline for free from any Telstra payphone.

Calling the 1800 number

  • You will need: a phone that can make outgoing calls and a working keypad to make menu a selection.

  • This connects you to the pre-recorded, audio version of The Hotline. There are no loud noises in this work; it consists of people talking, light music and sound effects.

  • The average experience last 10-15 minutes, but it may take longer. You can end the call at anytime. You may also call again to try to experience a different aspect of the work.

  • At the end of the call, you’re asked if you would like to leave a message about your own experience regarding reproductive healthcare. This is entirely optional. If you do not want to leave a message, simply hang up.

Using the chatbot

  • You will need: a connection to the internet and the ability to select a multiple choice option in the chat.

  • The chatbot works best on a desktop; unfortunately does not work well with screen readers.

  • Please note: the chatbot contains scrolling content and therefore may not be suitable for people experiencing migraines, epilepsy or motion sickness.

  • This is a fully automated chatbot; at no time are you speaking with a real person.

  • The average experience last 15 minutes, but you may take longer. You can end the chat at anytime. You may also refresh the page to start again and try to experience a different aspect of the work.

  • At the end of the work, you’re asked if you would like to send an email regarding your own experience regarding reproductive healthcare. This is entirely optional. If you do not want to send an email, simply close the chat.
